Effects of Colonial Changes on the Lives of Pastoralists

Effects of Colonial Changes on the Lives of Pastoralists: Wasteland Rules, Forest Acts, Criminal Tribes Act and imposition of grazing tax affected the lives of pastoralists badly. The effects were:

  • These measures led to the serious shortage of pastures as grazing lands were turned into cultivable land.
  • The shepherds and cattle herds could no longer freely graze their cattle in the forests.
  • Nomadic people had to move frequently from one place to another in search of pastures.
  • Animal stock declined as underfed cattle died in large numbers during scarcities and famines.
  • Some of the problems that pastoralists faced in the modern world are as follows:-

  • In the modern world, the life of pastoralists changed largely. their grazing grounds shranks, their movements were regulated and the revenue they had to pay increased. colonial powers thought all uncultivated land as unproductive.
  • Thus, wasteland rules were enacted and by these rules uncultivated lands were taken over and used for cultivation. So, the expansion of cultivation led to the declined of pastures for the cattle.
  • Various Forest Act were prevented the pastoralists from entering many forests that had provide forage for their cattle. even they had to pay taxes on every animal they gazed. But they have adapted to new times by changing the paths of their annual movements and reducing their cattle in their herds. They demanded rights in management of forest and water resources.
